Jan. 4—SUPERIOR — National Bank of Commerce has signed a $1.3 million agreement with the Superior School District that will both expand and extend its naming rights partnership.
The agreement was announced during the Jan. 2 Committee of the Whole meeting. In December 2013, the National Bank of Commerce secured naming rights to the NBC Spartan Sports Complex for 15 years with a $400,000 donation. The new agreement extends that for another 15 years, through 2043. It also expands the naming rights to include the main gymnasium at Superior High School.
As part of the agreement, the courts in the main arena will be named the Bruce Thompson Court in honor of a longtime NBC banker who had a significant role in making the initial Spartan Sports Complex agreement happen.
“There’s a desire to honor Bruce Thompson by honoring him through naming our courts in the main arena the Bruce Thompson Court,” said District Administrator Amy Starzecki.
The goal is to work in the gymnasium this summer — paint the walls, freshen up the paint within the gymnasium and add the new name to the floor as well as the scoreboard.
Board President Steve Olson said he was in full support of naming the court after Thompson. “Bruce has been a leader in this community,” and a great contributor, Olson said, with deep roots at SHS, where he was a Spartan basketball player.
Athletic Director Ella Olson said the district is extremely grateful for the partnership with NBC.
“I think it’s gonna be a nice transition, and it’ll be really fun to unveil that next August,” she said.
The rest of the funding would go toward upkeep and future athletic field replacement.
“The hope would be that money would be able to update our complex as well when the time is needed to redo the turf, which is an expensive replacement,” Starzecki said.
Naming rights available for other facilities
The school district is officially accepting applications for naming rights for a number of other facilities, as well. District Communications Specialist David Coy sent out a November release listing some of them. They include but are not limited to:
* The Superior High School Performing Arts Center, commons/cafeteria area, swimming pool, library media center, Spartan Manufacturing wing, auto shop wing and woodshop.
* The Superior Middle School library media center, athletic fields and community events center.
* Elementary school playgrounds and cafeterias.
According to district policy 7560, the school district may grant naming rights in consideration to recognize contributions made to the district. The contribution may be financial, sponsorship or the provision of equipment, materials, land or services. Contact Coy at 715-394-8700 for more information.
