The almost $1.3 million plan to create a youth hub at a longtime North Jacksonville community center is now complete.
In 2021, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida opened a location in city-owned building at Moncrief Road and Golfair Boulevard following a $300,000 renovation. The building was named for civil rights activist Clanzel T. Brown. The next phase, a $950,000, 48,000-square-foot multipurpose sports field on adjacent property, was unveiled June 22 with a sports clinic for area youth.
The area clubs are “dedicated to providing these types of safe spaces where young people can reach their full potential through academics, sports, the arts and more,” President Paul Martinez said. “This … park completes our long-term redevelopment of this city park and community center into the state-of-the-art Clanzel T. Brown Boys & Girls Club serving local kids and teens who need us most.”
The site for the sports complex was “strategically chosen based on its central location in an underserved community” of largely low-income, minority neighborhoods, according to the clubs.
