EAGLE, Idaho (CBS2) — Today marks the first phase of construction on the Eagle Regional Sports Park. This will replace the initial four fields in Duck Park that had been developed.

Once finished, this new 98-acre park will have four baseball/softball fields, five grass fields, tennis and pickleball courts, playground equipment, picnic areas and multiple trails for hiking, bike riding and equestrians.

The city says, “This Eagle Regional Sports Park was made possible through the strategic sale of the 35-acre park site off Floating Feather Road in Eagle, an impact fee agreement, and a public-private partnership with GWC Capital (developer of Valnova).”

Mayor Jason Pierce explains why the location is going to be perfect. “You know, it’s important because it really has highway access, right? When you have a regional sports park, you’re bringing people in from all over. And so, you want to make sure that it’s not really hindering your everyday folks that live in your community,” Pierce says. “So, Highway 16 was perfect to be off of it. And the future development that will be out here will eventually realize this is here right, so when there are people going through their communities to get to it, you know, it’s not affecting those folks that have already lived in an area and so that was big for us and for the kids.”

When asked why this park is so important to the community’s kids and parents, Mayor Pierce said, “It’s just important so they have a place to be out and enjoy the community, right? Let’s get the kids away from the screens and the computers and out playing baseball and playing soccer and rugby. Those important team sports, you know? And, you know, we’ll have tennis and pickleball out here. So, it’s about individual sports, too. It’s… you know, we just want to get the kids out and active.”

All of this work will be done in phases, with about two to three years between to generate funds and account for construction time.

Phase one is expected to be done next spring, with all four fields ready for some baseball games.

The new park is off Highway 16, at the furthest eastern point of W. Equest Lane.
