KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — If you’re a fan of pickleball, there are some exciting changes coming to the Shawnee Sports Complex.
As pickleball’s popularity continues to spread across the country a ribbon was cut Monday to open eight brand new pickleball courts at the Shawnee Sports Complex.
“We opened the sports complex in 2018 and we started getting emails about pickleball, and people wanted to add pickleball and this was part of the plan, but it was a later phase of the plan,” Kanawha County Commissioner Ben Salango said.
Salango said the Shawnee Sports Complex has brought in more than $100 million in economic impact to West Virginia, but pickleball courts were in high demand.
However, with the new addition, you may ask what exactly is pickleball? It is a cross between tennis, badminton and ping pong that draws all ages together.
“It becomes addicting to some people because of the social aspect, but also because in an hour and twenty minutes I get all the exercise I need,” West Virginia resident Dan Foster said.
Kanawha County officials are hoping to bring more people into the region. One sport at a time.
“It just adds to what Shawnee is all about; it’s about community involvement, so bring the family down to play it,” Salango said.
