The developer behind Overland Park’s most expansive mixed-use project has signed a Clearwater, Fla.-based firm to oversee its planned multisport complex.
Sports Facilities Management (SFM), an industry leader for sports and recreation venues, will manage Bluhawk Sports Park, which Price Brothers plans as the centerpiece to its $1 billion development at 165th Street and Antioch Road, the Overland Park-based developer announced Monday.
The latest sports park plans include a 309,000-square-foot indoor complex and 120,000-square-foot arena.
Part of the Sports Facilities Cos., SFM’s responsibilities will include day-to-day operations, staffing, programming, event booking and sponsorship sales at the complex. Price Brothers plans to break ground on the facility next summer, with tentative plans for completion in time for the fall 2022 indoor season.
The Bluhawk complex will become part of the so-called SFM Network — the nation’s largest web of sports tourism, league and local sports venues, serving 2,000 communities — creating revenue-generating procurement opportunities with sporting events and partners.
“We’re thrilled to bring the Overland Park and Johnson County communities the benefit of SFM Network’s management expertise and deliver on our vision of offering health, fitness, wellness and sports entertainment to the Kansas City region,” Price Brothers President Kent Price said in a Monday release.
“Price Brothers believes that Bluhawk’s ability to host national, regional and local sports events is greatly enhanced by its affiliation with SFM.”
The most recent project plans call for the Bluhawk complex to house an ice rink, eight basketball courts, an indoor turf football field and a 15,000-square-foot performance training center with a Ninja training course. The arena is proposed to have 3,500 seats for viewing amateur hockey games, high-level tournaments and concerts.
Intended as a “mixed-use destination,” the broader Bluhawk campus includes the expansion of AdventHealth South Overland Park into a full-service, 85-bed hospital scheduled to open in late 2021, plus multiple planned hotels and a movie theater.
On the retail side, as part of the Bluhawk Marketplace, a T.J. Maxx store plans to open its doors in spring 2021. Recent openings include AT&T, Cactus Grill, Gyu-Kaku and Panera Bread, with Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers aiming to open before the year’s end.
