After years of delay, the entire El Paso County Sportspark is open to the public. County commissioners held a grand re-opening Saturday to show the public what its new sports facility has to offer.
“It started 2012, and here we are, 2016,” said Precinct 1 County Commissioner Carlos Leon.
The project has been in the works longer than Leon has been in office. But with legal disputes and construction delays all in the past, the public finally got to experience the Sportspark renovations first-hand.
“It’s been a while, to be honest,” said Isaac Vega while waiting for the ribbon cutting.
Vega has been bringing his son to the Sportspark since he was 4 years-old. That boy is now 7 years-old, and the family is excited to see what the new space has to offer.
“The new concessions, the whole new fields,” Vega said. “I heard that there’s going to be kind of a new sports store as well. That’s going to be pretty exciting there.”
The pro shop was in partial operation for the opening, with Dick’s Sporting Goods giving it a trial run before committing fully. The restaurant and concessions were fully up and running, serving up ballpark favorites like hot dogs and in addition to healthful options such as salads, fruit, and hard-boiled eggs.
Local band Fungi Mungle provided the entertainment.
Girl’s fast-pitch exhibition games gave an idea of what the action will be like in the near future. Leon said there’s already demand for more.
“(Teams are) already calling us,” Leon said. “I mean people are – we’re not going to have a problem drawing people to our park.”
And as for what people think about what they’ve gotten for the wait?
“Looks like they did a good job,” Vega said.
