Multi-use sports facility coming to Barboursville, W.VA.

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — Three of Barboursville City Park’s 15 athletic fields are getting an upgrade.
A multi-use recreational complex will cost nearly $1.8 million and will allow for a variety of sports to be played on Barboursville’s athletic fields.
Phase one of the project will bring synthetic turf, lighting, seating, common areas and more. The fields would host a variety of sports, including soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse and football.
Barboursville Mayor Chris Tatum says the town has a tradition of hosting soccer tournaments and they feel now is a good time to do the improvements.
“Because we already have the bid for these tournaments for a few years out, we decided to go ahead and make phase one the outdoor facilities, meaning synthetic turf and the things that go with it,” Tatum said.
Tatum says there’s a need for more synthetic fields in the area and a better surface will be valuable for athletes.
“Everyone is always fighting for space. Practice space, game space and things like that,” Tatum said. “We feel like we’re meeting a community need for youth and adult recreation.”
Not too far away in Institute is the Shawnee Sports Complex. Kanawha County Commissioner Ben Salango says the Barboursville complex isn’t competition, it’s a compliment to what they can offer to big tournaments.
“The more turf fields we have, the better off we’re going to be. We’re excited Barboursville is getting turf fields. That’s just more tournaments we’ll be able to have. Bigger tournaments,” Salango said. “Having turf in Barboursville is going to be a compliment to travel sports around the area.”
In phase two, an indoor complex is also under consideration for other sports and activities in the future.
“We also feel it’s going to create another dynamic of quality of life for our residents and their families,” Tatum said.
The plan, Tatum said, is to get the fields done by the time this year’s soccer tournaments begin in late June.We Can Save You Money In 2020 !
