OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. — In its most recent report to the Ohio County Development Authority, officials with The Highlands Sports Complex say the complex is bringing in more money to the area than ever before. And 2023 is just getting started.

More than $3.75 million in economic impact can be attributed to the multi-sport facility since the start of the new year. Big events like Christmas at The Highlands gave General Manager Harvey Greenidge optimism headed into the new year.

“These numbers are growing,” Greenidge said. “We did see rises in revenue and in different areas. They’re getting better. People are starting to come back out and take part.”

The facility’s versatility brings in thousands of visitors each week, which in turn brings money to the surrounding businesses of The Highlands. Greenidge attributes a lot of success to the county’s support.

“The county owns this building,” Greenidge said. “We work hand-in-hand with everything we do here. We make sure that one side knows what the other is doing in this partnership. Whatever we need to get done; the county is here for it.”

While the first three months of 2023 have been record-setting, Greenidge is preparing for even more business as summer approaches.

“Summertime is one kind of busy,” he said. “This current busy is tournaments. Every weekend we’re running tournaments with volleyball, softball, soccer; it’s every weekend. We have anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 people here venturing into The Highlands Sports Complex.”
